Have you got your New Year's reading yet? You better get in early today because our branches close at 3PM today, Friday 31st December (Healesville Library is closed today). All libraries will be closed on Saturday 1st Jan, Sunday 2nd Jan and Monday 3rd Jan 2011.

Brass bands for everyone, but if you want to hear some rousing music and great musicianship, you can't go past The Central Band of the Royal Air Force. Their recent CD Reach for the skies includes melodies from movies such as Lawrence of Arabia and Those magnificent men in theire flying machines to Danny boy and The wind beneath my wings.

 

If classical music is your preference, a 2 disc compilation titled Classical 2010 includes both vocal and instrumental musicians of major stature, such as Nigel Kennedy, Sarah Brightman and Placido Domingo.

 

And from a different genre again, Marcia sings Tapestry, we have Marcia Hines singing lovely renditions of the folk songs of Carole King's iconic album. Tapestry remains the longest charting album by a female solo artist and was ranked number 36 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. You will find the original Tapestry in our collection and Tapestry revisited : tribute to Carole King, which records a TV special which included King and other stars such as Celine Dion and Aretha Franklin singing her well known songs.

Mt Evelyn Library closing for 7 weeks from Monday 10th January 2011

The Station House - Mt Evelyn Library will be closed for major structural work (new toilets and relocating the air conditioning) from Monday 10th January and will re-open on Monday 28th February. We apologise for the short notice.

• I have arranged to have the due date for items extended until the 1st March 2011. This will also include items recently checked out at Mt Evelyn that would be due in January. They will now also be due on the 1st March.
• The after hours book return chute will NOT be available during this time.
• Reservations can be collected from Lilydale Library, Anderson Street, Lilydale during the closure
• Holiday activities will not be run at Mt Evelyn. New holiday program
• WiFi will still be available at the café but public PCs will not be available

The last three weeks have whirled by, and so there are several topics covered in the radio show which we need to catch up on.

Firstly, the children's and teenager's books which Pia reviewed are as follows.........
Gorgon in the gully by Melina Marchetta which is part of a great new series from Puffin. Priced to be affordable from a kid's pocket money, and great stories from popular authors. Maudie and Bear by Jan Ormerod and Freya Blackwood contains several short stories about Maudie and her friend Bear, with beautiful illustrations. A fantastic new book to share with young children..

Wonky donkey, words and music by Craig Smith, illustrations by Katz Cowley. A crazy story/song for primary school age that will have you laughing out loud. Ultimate Dino-pedia by "Dino" Don Lessem, illustrated by Franco Tempesta is a fantastic book for dinosaur fans to enjoy. Torment by Lauren kate is the second in a romance/adventure series, perfect for those teens who love the paranormal.

For family history researchers, there is the good news that you can access Ancestry and FindMyPast databases via Wifi in all our libraries. This means that you do not need to book a library pc, but can research with these resources on your own laptop as long as the library is open. And not to forget the excellent resources available through the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies www.aigs.org.au and the Genealogical Society of Victoria www.gsv.org.au

Music on our recent shows has been from So Frenchy So Chic 2009 and Cafe Musette by Enrique Ugarte.

Closure dates for maintenance on Belgrave and Boronia libraries in 2011

Belgrave and Boronia libraries will be closed in January/February for some maintenance to be completed. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Closed Monday 31st January - Wednesday 2nd February for recarpeting.

Boronia Library
Closed Monday 31st January, reopening Monday 14th February for work on the public toilets, flooring and kitchen. We are also installing security gates and check out machines at the same time.

On Wednesday's show

Another way to cope with the heat is to pull the curtains and put on an entertaining dvd. There are some wonderful TV series which have made it onto dvd, going back as far as The Honeymooners with Jackie Gleason, The rag trade with Sheila Hancock and Reg Varney or Wycliffe, to the latest series of CSI Miami or Inspector Rex. Some of my favourites are the more quirky series which don't always run to more than a couple, such as Pushing Daisies or Black Books. Pushing Daisies takes the premise that a young boy can bring the dead back to life, but with a couple of tricky conditions, who as an adult assists a private detective to solve difficult murder cases. It is very funny, with many eccentric and endearing characters. Black Books is equally eccentric, but a lot more cynical about human nature and relationships. Bernard is the Irish book shop owner who spends his day drinking wine, smoking and reading books, and is matched against his niave and optimistic assistant Mannie, and his friend Fran from the shop next door who is both dippy and crafty.
There are great documentaries such as Who do you think you are? UK series. I have just finished watching series 2  which included wonderful programmes on  Jeremy Paxman, Sheila Hancock and Stephen Fry. In the process of delving into people's family tree, a lot of social history is revealed too, in a very effective way.

I probably don't need to remind you of the great British costume dramas, covering works of Dickens, Austen, Hardy and more.  However you may not have come across Middlemarch by George Eliot, which highlights the frustrations of an intelligent young woman circumscribed in what she is allowed to do. It also features the excellent actor Rufus Sewell as the love interest. Another good reason for watching.

Music today was from Cafe Musette, featuring Enrique Ugarte on accordion and Peche a la mouche, from Rue de la Trompette (the last is a personal cd)

Belgrave Library currently has no power, no Internet, phones

Belgrave Library is currently without power. They are expecting to open as there is enough natural light. However there will be no Internet and staff will be checking items out manually by writing them down. Please limit the number of items borrowed.

The power company estimate that the power may be out until 2PM but this may change due to the weather.

Croydon Library closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday due to flooding

As Croydon Library has extensive carpet damage due to flooding they will not be open to the public Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Depending on the progress of "drying out" the decision to re-open will be on a day-to-day basis.

Are you passionate about your library? Yarra Ranges Council want your input

Yarra Ranges Council is developing a five year Library Strategy and Action Plan which will be important in shaping the future of our libraries. Through the Yarra Ranges Views Online forum we are seeking community input on their current library service and what they believe their library should look like in the future. Discussion leaders will help to encourage conversations with thought provoking questions and comments.

The feedback received from the online forum will help in the development of a Library Strategy. The draft Library Strategy will go out for public comment and focus groups will also be held to discuss. in detail the input received from the community.

The forum will open on Monday 29th November and will close on Friday 10th December. Feel free to share this post to encourage participation in this important discussion. You don't need to be residing in the Yarra Ranges to have your say in the future of our library service.

Update: Croydon closed, Yarra Junction open but with no public PCs

After yesterday's deluge and flooding, Croydon Library is closed today. There is flooding to 2/3 of the library. The only dry areas are the front desk and by the window near the pond. They hope to have a restricted opening tomorrow for returns only.

Yarra Junction Library is open today but there will be no public PCs and that area will be off limits.

All other libraries are open as usual.

The Yarra Ranges Council is developing a five year Library Strategy and Action Plan which will be important in shaping the future of their libraries. As part of that strategy they are looking for feedback from people in the community who are interested in how our libraries currently operate and how they may change in the future.

On the 17th November's show
Every year there is a new CD issue called So Frenchy So Chic, which is the 'Unofficial Soundtrack to the Alliance Francaise' French Film Festival. The 2009 edition is a bumper 2 CD set which is full of fun and romantic music. Previous years are also available in the collection.  For unashamed romance, you can't go past any of Paul Potts' CDs. Today we played from Once Chance which is full of lovely singing, including 'Nessun Dorma' and 'Music of the night'.  There is an abundance of good music arriving at our libraries constantly, and if you would like to keep track of the latest, just click the New Titles link on the left of our web page, and on the next screen you will see a wonderful range of options from CDs, to DVDs to latest books.

Don't forget too that from the web page, you can access the Family History Newsletter and Military History Newsletter via Family History. In the October issue, reviews of new books include Getting the most out of Findmypast.com.au by Rosemary Kopittke and Saltwater ink : Voices from the Australian Seas. In the first title the author points out that subscriptions to online history and genealogy research sites are not cheap so it pays to know how to use them most effectively, and she includes many examples and tips on how to achieve the most from your searches. The second title covers a selection of sea‐diaries, amateur newspapers and letters from the 1800’s and covers the sea voyages made by immigrants to Australia. They had little else to do on the ship, beyond childcare and other domestic tasks, for on the ships they did not need to work for their food, so many took up their quill pen. They could be called Victoria blogs.

The Victorian Kids Summer Reading Club starts in December so make sure to stop by with the kids to register and collect a reading record.

Rewards include stickers, temporary tattoos and wristbands. All club members who completely fill their record are eligible for the fantastic Summer Reading Club Party and will go into the draw to win a really cool prize.

If your kids haven't participated before the club is a fun way for them to earn rewards by reading. Upon registration members receive a reading record. Kids read books appropriate for their reading level and add the details to their record. Stop by the library to get the record validated. Kids may need to answer a question so we make sure they really read the book.

Logging into your membership record

These are the things you only find out once you go live with a website. The obscure login link on the far right of the website was actually a login area for editors of the website. We've had some feedback that members were trying to login to their account using that link.

The members area to login to view your account and place holds is on the left, image below.

I've now hidden the editor login link. The home link is up at the top-right of the website.

The library has a new website and it's blue for Movember

We're pleased to launch our new website today, it's a big change!

The infrastructure of the site is based on a Content Management System written by staff member David Funnell that we have previously used for our Intranet. David and I have worked together to adapt and develop it for our website. It will mean that several staff members can assist in keeping the content updated.

You'll notice the member's area on the left hand side. You can search for books, CDs, DVDs from there. Also login if you want to place holds and check your account.

What's happening at our libraries - Twitter feed

The What's happening at our libraries articles are now displayed as a feed from our Twitter account. I've also linked our blog to Twitter so whenever I publish a blog post it posts to Twitter and the front page of the website. So you'll always stay up-to-date. Did you know that Eastern Regional Libraries has sets of books for loan by community book groups. Each book club set consists of 10 copies and there are notes supplied for many of the titles. We have just increased the annual fee to  $220 (including GST) per bookclub. Further information is available at any branch of Eastern Regional Libraries. Please note that we cannot assist you in joining a bookclub that uses this service.

I've updated Reader's Corner with the list of bookclub titles available for bookclub members. The title list with sysnopsis will be updated as soon as I receive it.

In addition the cost of membership to the Eastern Regional Libraries bookclub has increased to $220.

Lunch in the Library – Meet Nick Anchen for a celebration of the Dandenong Ranges

Writer/photographer Nick Anchen grew up in Croydon in sight of the Dandenong Ranges. He has explored the Dandenongs on foot, bicycle and by car documenting their beauty and history. Since establishing his publishing firm Sierra Publishing in 2007, Nick has produced a number of publications on the Ranges including Images of the Dandenongs, Puffing Billy in the Modern Era and Macarthur Job's Disaster in the Dandenongs.

Are we safer in the air than on the road? Meet aviation expert and author Macarthur Job OAM

Macarthur Job has spent his working life in the aviation industry, firstly as a pilot, then with the Department of Civil Aviation as Senior Inspector of Aircraft Safety, and finally as the author of numerous books and articles on the subject of aircraft safety.

His book Disaster in the Dandenongs published in 2008 deals with the fatal Kyeema air crash on 25th October 1938, 72 years ago.

A former managing editor of the prestigious industry journal Aircraft, Mac Job was awarded an OAM in 2003 "for services to the promotion of aviation safety".

Guitar hero show down held at Croydon Youth Centre EVs a success

On Friday the 8th October Eastern Regional Libraries (ERL) Youth Services Librarians co-ran a guitar hero game competition entitled Guitar hero show down with the Youth Services team of Maroondah City Council, held at EV's, the local youth centre in Croydon.

The competition was fierce and the guitar skills were masterly, after a sudden death round involving the remaining three survivors a victor was clear and a prize ceremony followed, bestowing iTunes vouchers, movie tickets from the local cinema and epic amounts of fame and glory to boot. Fun was had by all, with mighty competitors and cheering groupies all sharing pizza and laughs after the competition.

A big thanks to the friendly Youth Services staff of Maroondah City Council for supplying a worthy venue and much needed equipment. An equally big thankyou to ERL Youth Services Managers Janet and Lorraine for their much needed support.

Such events promote library awareness, local teenage outreach and valued networking opportunities between ERL and Maroondah city council. stay tuned for you next exciting adventure in library outreach @ ERL

Melbamania: A Diva's Day Out - Sue Thompson chats about Australia's first diva

Melba was Australia’s royalty and rock star of the 1900s. When it was announced she would return to Lilydale during her visit to Australia since becoming famous on the world stage in the 1880s, the whole town galvanised into action.

Writing of her one-day whirlwind visit on November 8, 1902 the Punch magazine report said Melbamania had hit Lilydale.

Author Sue Thompson spent many months researching that visit for her book A Diva’s Day Out and will give a talk about the phenomena that is Melba and why she became our nation’s first Diva and was treated like royalty and mobbed like a rock star by the masses of Melburnians.

You may have noticed a slight change to the website. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we've turned our website pink to highlight the fantastic efforts of Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) works to ensure that women diagnosed with breast cancer, and their families, receive the very best information, treatment, care and support possible, no matter who they are or where they live.

BCNA supplies free information resources, including the My Journey Kit, which is a comprehensive information resource for women newly diagnosed with early breast cancer and the Hope & Hurdles Pack for women with secondary breast cancer.

We're making a few changes to our telephone auto attendant at Eastern Regional Libraries

I'm currently working on some changes to our telephone auto attendant. The first option will be:

For renewals and enquiries press 1
For opening hours press 2
For Administration press 3

I'm also grouping the branches according to size and the number of loans, so the large branches with many members renewing will appear first. This will also assist those members who don't know what council area they are in. The groups will be:

Knox, Croydon, Ringwood and Rowville
Lilydale, Belgrave, Boronia and Yarra Junction
Mooroolbark, Ferntree Gully, Healesville, Montrose and Mt Evelyn

I should have the changes uploaded to the system sometime next week.

Author Ilsa Evans visits Montrose Town Centre

Ilsa Evans has written seven books, all published by Pan Macmillan. The first five books (including the three that make up the Laundry Series) are filled with fun and laughter and the reality of life in the suburbs. The sixth, Broken, is a more serious read that stems from the findings of a PhD (on the long-term effects of domestic violence) that Ilsa completed in 2005. The Family Tree, released in Feb 2009 is a mix of both the lighter and darker shades of life. Her latest book Sticks and Stones, a sequel to Broken will be released in September 2010.

Fractured fairytales at Croydon Library this morning

This morning the local parents and their children were treated to a brilliant fairy show provided by Carp Productions. It was loud, exciting and hilariously silly to
boot. We had an overall crowd of around 60-65 parents and kids, with some walk-ins to make up numbers.

Fun was had by all, especially the kings and queens from the audience that got to tell everybody what to do! A big thanks to Carp and a big thanks to Croydon
staff for managing the sudden child influx in the library.

Rowville Library will be re-opening on Thursday 9th September

I've been setting up the 3 Self Check units at Rowville Library today and they look fantastic. I've named them Bella, Buzz and Buffy.

Rowville Library will re-open at 9am tomorrow morning and staff will be guiding you in their use. It's really easy.

Report has finished, records are unlocked and you can place holds

I just got back from the long weekend and caught up with the news that the report that was causing grief on Friday finished at 8:02PM on Friday night. This means there is no longer an issue with locking records and you can get back to placing holds.

All items that were returned on Friday will have been checked in and back dated to that date so there are no charges.

Records locked causing an issue with some items being checked in

Due to a consortium report that has been running all day in error and editing all items in the database some items are locked when staff attempt to check them in. If the report does not finish tonight, please note that all items will be clearcharged from members cards as soon as staff are able to do so. This will clear the overdue charge on the card if the item is not checked in on the day it was returned.

Also, you will probably still have issues placing holds via the e-Library catalogue. Keep trying over the weekend.

We apologise for any inconvenience. This issue is out of our control.

I will try to update everyone via the blog over the weekend.

Some issues placing holds via e-Library this morning

You may have experienced some difficulty placing holds via the e-Library catalogue this morning.

A consortium report has been running and has locked records causing some difficulty in the branches and with placing holds. Its out of our control and the report should be finished soon. Perhaps log in later in the afternoon and try placing the hold again.
