The Eastern Regional Library Show 29th Dec 2010 Eastern FM 98.1

Library staff members Lesley Conway and Pia Butcher run a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in next Wednesday for a great show.

On the today's show

Brass bands for everyone, but if you want to hear some rousing music and great musicianship, you can't go past The Central Band of the Royal Air Force. Their recent CD Reach for the skies includes melodies from movies such as Lawrence of Arabia and Those magnificent men in theire flying machines to Danny boy and The wind beneath my wings.

If classical music is your preference, a 2 disc compilation titled Classical 2010 includes both vocal and instrumental musicians of major stature, such as Nigel Kennedy, Sarah Brightman and Placido Domingo.

And from a different genre again, Marcia sings Tapestry, we have Marcia Hines singing lovely renditions of the folk songs of Carole King's iconic album. Tapestry remains the longest charting album by a female solo artist and was ranked number 36 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. You will find the original Tapestry in our collection and Tapestry revisited : tribute to Carole King, which records a TV special which included King and other stars such as Celine Dion and Aretha Franklin singing her well known songs.

The Eastern Regional Library Show 17th Nov 2010 Eastern FM 98.1

Library staff members Lesley Conway and Pia Butcher run a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in next Wednesday for a great show.

On the 17th November's show
Every year there is a new CD issue called So Frenchy So Chic, which is the 'Unofficial Soundtrack to the Alliance Francaise' French Film Festival. The 2009 edition is a bumper 2 CD set which is full of fun and romantic music. Previous years are also available in the collection.  For unashamed romance, you can't go past any of Paul Potts' CDs. Today we played from Once Chance which is full of lovely singing, including 'Nessun Dorma' and 'Music of the night'.  There is an abundance of good music arriving at our libraries constantly, and if you would like to keep track of the latest, just click the New Titles link on the left of our web page, and on the next screen you will see a wonderful range of options from CDs, to DVDs to latest books.

Don't forget too that from the web page, you can access the Family History Newsletter and Military History Newsletter via Family History. In the October issue, reviews of new books include Getting the most out of Findmypast.com.au by Rosemary Kopittke and Saltwater ink : Voices from the Australian Seas. In the first title the author points out that subscriptions to online history and genealogy research sites are not cheap so it pays to know how to use them most effectively, and she includes many examples and tips on how to achieve the most from your searches. The second title covers a selection of sea‐diaries, amateur newspapers and letters from the 1800’s and covers the sea voyages made by immigrants to Australia. They had little else to do on the ship, beyond childcare and other domestic tasks, for on the ships they did not need to work for their food, so many took up their quill pen. They could be called Victoria blogs.

The Eastern Regional Library Show 17th March & 24th March 2010

Library staff members Lesley Conway and Pia Butcher run a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in Wednesday for a great show.

On Wed 17th March's show

A message from the clouds : a biography of Robert Graham Carey is the story of one of Australia's aviation pioneers. The names of Kingford Smith and Nancy Bird are well known, but the story of Carey's adventurous spirit and entrepreneurial energy was new to me. Robert Carey's grand-daughter Edith Martin was our guest on the radio today, and spoke of the task of bringing research by Des Martin and recollections of her mother Bertha Carey together into an interesting narrative. The book is jam packed with both information about the growth of aviation in Australia from the early 1900's and with the story of an amazing man.

Carey's life span took him form ownership of livery stables to running a Ford car dealership, to flying the same model Bleriot bi-plane which was the first plane to fly across the English Channel. His enthusiasm for new challenges and adventure seem to have passed down the family line, and we will invite Edith back to the program to talk about her own travels, and more about the writing, researching and links with the world of aviation.

On Wed 24th March's show

Lots of new music has been coming through this year, including 'best of' CD's and compilations. Today we played tracks from Chris Isaak : live in Australia, The best of the Easybeats and James Taylor : greatest hits. Some other wonderful music I have been listening to lately is the 3 seperate volumes of Ella Fitzgerald's A-tisket, A-tasket which include a lot of tracks not so well known; Come out swinging (a double CD compilation of great swing songs) and So Frenchy, so chic : the unofficial soundtrack to the 2009 French Film Festival.

CD is the recording medium of the moment, and aside from music our libraries have a wonderful selection of audio books on CD. The readers are professional actors for the most part, and do a wonderful job of bringing the stories to life. Our members relate how they like to listen on long road trips, in the car on the way to work, while ironing, even while having  a long soak in the bath.

I also mentioned that there is some wonderful comedy on DVD in our collections, and one comedian I particularly enjoy Danny Bhoy : live at the Sydney Opera House and Danny Bhoy live at the Atheneum. Low key and about everyday things, yet funny enough to have you laughing till you cry.

Staff recommend....

You've probably noticed the book cover in the sidebar on the right announcing staff recommendations. Our staff have been busy reading during the summer holidays and I've found this neat social network, a bit like Library Thing, called Listal. You can create your own catalogue of books, DVDs, CDs, then create interesting lists to share with the world & create widgets for your blog or website. I've gone with the standard book, DVD & CD recommendations (see webgurl's listal profile), however others have gotten creative and made lists of the 2010 Oscar nominations or banned/censored books. To advance to see the next book just click on the + sign, however the slideshow will advance on its own as well.

The book covers link to the Listal list, however I've moved the catalogue search box to be just under the cover so you can easily search for the titles.

I'm just deciding where to put the DVD & CD recommendation lists so you should see those appearing soon.

What do you think? Useful?

Cheers, Maryanne

The Eastern Regional Library Show 17th December 2008

Library staff members Lesley Conway and Pia Butcher run a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in next Wednesday for a great show.

On today's show

The world gets busier over the weeks leading up to Christmas, and a good antidote to the stress is a big laugh. A few weeks ago I mentioned some great comedy on CD, this week its DVDs. You can't beat a a good TV series; Get Smart, Steptoe and Son, Black Books, The Office, Kath and Kim, the list is enormous, all available from your local library.

Having mentioned Black Books I have to let you know that the very funny Bill Bailey (who played Manny in the show) has two live performances on DVD Bewilderness and Bill Bailey Live. If you are after the more challenging and in-your-face humour, there are half a dozen Billy Connolly DVD's, and if like me you enjoy a consumate story teller, then the self-titled Dave Allen is for you. Humourous movies are also in good supply, from Cat Balou, Tom Jones and the Doctor series with Dirk Bogarde, to more recent releases such as
Muriel's Wedding, The Castle, Robots and Robot Chicken, Star Wars.

Something which has become a theme over the last few weeks is songs from few decades ago which have been used successfully on film soundtracks, and which have stimulated renewed interest in the singer and the music of the period. One which immediately comes to mind is Louis Armstrong's version of What a Wonderful World which was used in the movie Good Morning Vietnam. Another is Jimmy Durante's Make someone happy in Sleepless in Seattle which has reminded me what a clever showman he was. If anyone reading this blog would like to suggest other great songs and singers who have been rediscovered by a younger generation through film, let me know through our contact form (address to Lesley Conway) and we will try to play them over the summer holidays.

The Eastern Regional Library Show 12th November 2008

Library staff members Lesley Conway and Pia Butcher run a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in next Wednesday for a great show.

On Wednesday's show

What makes you laugh? It's such a personal thing, and I don't know about you, but it's impossible to explain too. I laugh as much at the slapstick of Eric Sykes in The plank as I do at the verbal nonsense of Victor Borge and the funny stories of Bill Cosby.

Our libraries have a huge, and growing collection of CD's and DVD's of some brilliant comedy. You can find DVD's of some very early TV comedy such as The Honeymooners, The rag trade or Steptoe and Son, to M*A*S*H*, Kath and Kim and Summer Heights High.

If you have fond memories as I do of listening to some great radio programs, you should enjoy the range of humour on CD. Today we heard a skit from George Burns and Gracie Field and song from Ethel Merman and Jimmy Durante on the CD Vintage Comedy Collection : vol 3. There are three volumes in our libraries, all with a treasure house of timeless comedy. If you hunger to hear Victor Borge doing his Phonetic Punctuation skit again, you will find it on The hilarious Victor Borge, or his wonderful version of Chopsticks, then Comedy : Victor Borge and Tony Hancock is the one. If you're looking for current comedians, Billy Connelly, Dawn French, Lano and Woodley, French and Saunders and Lenny Henry are all in the collection, and many more.

---- Lesley

As far as comedians go for me it's Bob Newhart. Unfortunately we don't have one of his CDs at Eastern Regional (I must rectify that), but if you get the chance to listen to one, particularly listen to the following skits The Driving Instructor and King Kong.
"Did he cover starting the car? And the "other way of stopping". What's "the other way of stopping"? Throwing it in reverse. That … would do it."
The Driving Instructor - Bob Newhart

"Yes, sir, I looked in the handbook index under 'unauthorized personnel' and 'people without passes' and 'apes,' and 'ape's toes,' but it's not in there"
King Kong - Bob Newhart
What makes you laugh?

The Eastern Regional Library Show 10th Sept 2008

Library staff members Lesley Conway and Pia Butcher run a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in next Wednesday for a great show.

On Wednesday's show

Local musicians and musical groups often contact us in the library when they have produced a CD, and we are very happy to hear from them. One of the CDs I had along today was recorded by a very local group, the Sweet Sassafras Community Choir. In three short years they have developed a very polished sound, and on their CD Shine on me you will find a wonderful mix of songs from around the world.

Next came a couple of tracks from First Take, produced by the Australian fiddle music school which is based in Melbourne, featuring some toe tapping polkas, jigs and reels.

Finally, a very well known musician Tony O'Connor whose technique is to record sounds in natural environments and compose music to blend and enhance these natural sounds. Today we heard Memories from his CD Rainforest Magic, and there are several more of his titles in our libraries, including Awakenings, Summer Rain and Kakadu.

It's not just music CDs and books read onto CD in our collection. There are also some very useful and informative CD-ROMS in our branches, including Plants of Melbourne's Outer East : indigenous flora and environmental weeds (and how to remove the weeds)

Latest CDs & DVDs

Well.... you're probably wondering what's happened to the lists of new CDs and DVDs that I usually add to the blog. I've been having a bit of a technical problem with the script that creates the list and have been unable to post these articles.

I'll have these lists on the blog very soon - I promise, er hope :-D.

Cheers everyone and have a great weekend. If you want to check the weather forecast for the Cox Plate tomorrow, check it out at the Bureau of Meteorology.
