Former radio journalist Chris Womersley has been steadily building a reputation as a must read author. His first book The Low Road won the 2008 Ned Kelly Award for the Best First Novel, whilst his short story The Possibility of Water won the 2007 Josephine Ulrick Literature Prize. His latest book Bereft (2010) has been nominated for the Indie Awards.

Enjoy lunch with author & poet Tess Evans at Ringwood's Reading Café

Tess Evans has spent a number of years working in the TAFE system teaching and counselling a wide variety of students. This diverse experience is evident in her first novel Book of Lost Threads (Allen and Unwin 2010)

In the years prior to completing her novel Tess has won a number of awards for her short stories and poetry most notably the C J Dennis Award for Poetry in 2005. Tess is currently studying for a Diploma of Professional Writing at NMIT.

Come along to the Reading Café with master storyteller Arnold Zable

Arnold Zable is a weaver of dreams and a master storyteller. Strongly influenced by his travels and the migrant experience, Arnold is the author of a number of books that draw on these themes, Café Scheherazade, Scraps of Heaven and the Fig Tree. Arnold is the president of the Melbourne branch of the international writers’ group PEN. His most recent book is The Sea of Many Returns.

Reading Café – Meet Alison Wong

Alison Wong is both a poet and author. Her initial studies and career were in mathematics and IT, however literature is her passion.

In 1996 Alison was awarded a Reader's Digest NZ Society of Authors Fellowship in the Stout Research Centre, and in 2002 the Robert Burns Fellowship at Otago University.

Cup, an anthology of Alison’s poetry was published in 2006.  As the Earth Turns Silver (2009) is her first novel and draws on her Chinese heritage.

Alison Wong is the winner of the 2009 Janet Frame Award for fiction.

Reading Cafe - Meet Kevin Rabalais

Born in New Orleans and now resident in Melbourne, Kevin Rabalais first attracted attention in his home country with Novel Voices published in 2003. Having read the story of the Burke and Wills expedition Kevin decided to relocate to Australia and write a work of fiction based on the story. After four years Landscape of Desire is the result, a wonderful lyrical novel. An excellent speaker with a superb knowledge of literature this will be a talk not to be missed. Cost includes lunch.

Reading Café - Meet Rochelle Jackson

Rochelle Jackson is known to listeners of 774 through her Crime Couch segment on Derek Guille's evening program. By profession an investigative journalist, Rochelle has worked for the NSW police, and is currently employed as a producer with ABC Radio.

Her first book In Your Face (2005) was a look at the life and crimes of Bill 'the Texan' Longley. Her latest book Inside Their Minds was launched in August 2008.

Reading Café - Kate Cole-Adams

The name Kate Cole-Adams is known to readers of The Age where she is an editor and former senior journalist. Walking to the Moon is Kate’s first novel and explores the emotional journey of her main character Jess Young as she wakes from coma and returns to the world. The manuscript of this book was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards in 2006, and has been warmly received by reviewers since its publication in July 2008.

Reading Cafe - Meet Jarad Henry

Criminologist Jarad Henry works for the Police Strategy Unit,he has taken this experience and created Detective Rubens McCauley. Rubens first appeared in Jarad's first book Head Shot and returns in the long awaited Blood Sunset.

Jarad's books have been shortlisted for the Victorian Premier's Awards, and the Ned Kelly Awards. His second book Spider Web was shortlisted for the Vogel Awards and won the Fellowship of Australian Writers' Jim Hamilton Award.

Jarad will be a conducting a crime writing workshop at the forthcoming Maroondah Writers and Readers Festival.
