Any birdwatchers? Come to Birds of the Yarra Catchment

Peter Mason will talk about the new publication Birds of the Yarra Catchment: and where to find them.

"An excellent guide for birdwatchers visiting or living around Melbourne. Stretching from the mountains to the sea, the Yarra River catchment covers an area of approximately 4,000 square kilometres.  For each selected habitat along the river, there is a selection of birds that are likely to be seen, with particular attention given to "local special" birds."

Peter, along with other members of the Yarra Valley Branch of BOCA (Bird Observation and Conservation Australia) have been heavily involved in producing this informative book. Copies of this publication will be for sale - would make a great Christmas present!

Are we safer in the air than on the road? Meet aviation expert and author Macarthur Job OAM

Macarthur Job has spent his working life in the aviation industry, firstly as a pilot, then with the Department of Civil Aviation as Senior Inspector of Aircraft Safety, and finally as the author of numerous books and articles on the subject of aircraft safety.

His book Disaster in the Dandenongs published in 2008 deals with the fatal Kyeema air crash on 25th October 1938, 72 years ago.

A former managing editor of the prestigious industry journal Aircraft, Mac Job was awarded an OAM in 2003 "for services to the promotion of aviation safety".

Montrose Library is closing at 3pm today Tuesday 17th August due to power outage

Montrose Library will experience an interruption to power between 3pm and 6pm today. Therefore they will be open 12noon-3pm today instead of 12noon-7pm.

Venus Self Check unit at Montrose Library

We've installed the Venus Self Check unit at the newly refurbished Montrose Library. I've been working hard on the guide to its use and receipts and can give you a sneak peek.




Members will be able to check out and renew their own items with the units. Its quick and easy.



This is the welcome screen and guide to borrowing items through the Self Check.

1. Scan your library card by placing it on the shelf with the barcode facing up.
2. Stack your items, up to 4 at a time, on the glass. Spread them out a little so that the tags are detected. Each item successfully borrowed will display in green with a tick.
3. Touch the Print Receipt button and collect your receipt.
4. Don't forget your library card and items

Staff will be available to assist with any problems and to help with your book selections.

The units will be gradually introduced at our other branches in the coming months.

Cook Here and Now is a concept developed by San Francisco food lover Marco Flavio Marinucci. Following successful presentations in America, Melbourne is the first city to adopt the idea.

Cook Here and Now brings together a group of people to select, prepare and share locally sourced food. At several events at local farmers’ markets in the coming months communities will get the opportunity to enjoy a shared meal. This is a movement with potential for building community and promoting healthy eating.

Join Library Week Ambassador our special ‘foodie’ Ann Creber and Slow Food Melbourne President Alison Peake to discuss this exciting new idea and its possibilities for local communities.

Refurbishment for Montrose Library

Montrose Library will be closed on the following dates due to a refurbishment:

Closing 12noon Saturday 29th May and re-opening at 2pm Monday 28th June

Montrose Gardeners : Local plants & animals in the home garden

Almost everyone would like to attract wildlife of some kind into their garden - without a little wildlife the suburbs are sterile, lifeless and boring places. Fortunately, by intelligent use of local native and exotic plants we can attract a range of Australian wildlife into even city gardens. In the outer east we are fortunate to have so much bush around us, offering us a greater variety of birds, butterflies, mammals and reptiles. Additionally, by providing habitats for these animals in our gardens, we are helping local conservation efforts to ensure their survival.
