Lilydale Library expected to open as usual tomorrow

Lilydale Library is expected to open tomorrow at 10am. The driers are currently being removed and although there's not yet carpet in the affected area the library should, barring the unexpected be able to open.

Lilydale Library is closed today due to flood damage caused on Monday night. They will be drying out the carpet.

Lilydale Library flooded, Birds of Yarra talk cancelled

Lilydale Library suffered some flooding last night. As a result the Birds of the Yarra Catchment talk has been cancelled and rescheduled for Tuesday 17th July.

The library will open as normal, however the affected areas have been partitioned and if driers are needed to dry the carpet, the library may need to close at some time during the day.

I will keep members apprised of the status of the library as information comes to hand.

Get Reading: Dual Walkley Award winning journalist Caroline Overington discusses the move to fiction

In her career as a journalist Caroline Overington won two Walkley Awards for Investigative Journalism and the Keith Murdoch Award for Journalistic Excellence.

She is the author two nonfiction books Only in New York and Kickback which won the Blake Dawson Prize for Business Literature.

In 2009 Caroline wrote her first work of fiction Ghost Child and followed it in 2010 with I Came to Say Goodbye. Both books were critically acclaimed. Matilda is Missing, Caroline’s third novel, will be published in October 2011.

Caroline comes to us today as part of Get Reading, a federal government sponsored initiative. Please join us for a most interesting lunch.

Tell tales of the Yarra Valley - Along the Warburton Line, a photographic journey

Join Victorian Railways historian Michael Foley for a fascinating photographic journey.  Now a popular walking and cycling trail the Lilydale to Warburton railway was an important link for the often remote settlers of the Yarra Valley and played a vital part in the development of the area.  Follow the line from Lilydale up the mountain to Mt Evelyn, down to Wandin and on to Yarra Junction and Warburton.

Michael and colleague Robert Bleakley will examine daily operations on the railway, special trains that passed through and some notable incidents. Examining rare documentary material we will learn about the development of the line as well as significant people and events.

Michael Foley is the author of The Railway Ramblers series of articles and is currently researching a book on the Lilydale to Warburton railway, to be called Rails through the Yarra Mist.

Step by step feltmaking - with a chance to win a lattice scarf made on the day

Felt is one of the oldest ways of making fabric, it is thought to have been around for about eight thousand years. Carolyn, who is a local artist and a member of the Yarra Valley Open Studios Group, will be demonstrating the fabulous art of feltmaking.

Carolyn from Ripples on the Pond Textile Arts Studio, has an artistic spirit and love of blending colours. She keeps an open mind to new and different textile applications and her work mainly involves layering and three dimensionality and combines different disciplines of fabric and textiles.

Carolyn will hand build a Lattice Scarf to be raffled and starter packs will also be given away on the day.

The Eastern Regional Library Show 8th June 2011

Library staff members Lesley Conway and Pia Butcher run a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in next week for a great show.

What was it like to be and agricultural labourer in and English village in the 1880's? Or a teenage girl at boarding school in 1880's Melbourne?
The first is described in Lark Rise to Candleford by Flora Thompson, and the second in The getting of wisdom by Henry Handel Richardson. Next Wednesday, the 15th of June the Lilydale Book Chat group is looking at novels and biographies which might give some insight into the lives of our ancestors, an interest which is often stimulated when we begin looking into our family history. Most of our branches host Book Chats, and these are a chance to broaden your reading, and enjoy some lively discussion.

Music today was from Ella Fitzgerald, and there are many great CD's of her music in the collection, of which the A tisket, a tasket 3 CD set is the most comprehensive.

Tell Tales of the Yarra Valley – the Kyeema Disaster with Macarthur Job OAM

On a foggy day in October 1938 the DC2 Kyeema crashed into the western face of the Dandenongs taking the lives of Charles Hawker MHR, thirteen other passengers and four air crew.

Macarthur Job has had a long career in the aviation industry, firstly as a pilot and was the former Senior Inspector of Aircraft Safety with the Department of Civil Aviation. Mac was managing director of the prestigious industry journal Aircraft and is the respected author of numerous articles and books on the subject of air safety. His book Disaster in the Dandenongs: the Kyeema Airliner Tragedy was published in 2008.

Get an insight into mental illness with Kathy from the Mental Illness Fellowship

Join Kathy from the Mental Illness Fellowship for a talk about understanding mental illness and the support that is available for people living with an illness,  as well as their family, friends and carers.

Storytime for Toddlers has been cancelled. The U3A computer class will go ahead in the training room as scheduled.

Currently the bookchute is open for returns however this is weather permitting. The bookchute had to be closed last night because of water flooding under the door.
