Mainly for men - Learn about Enterprize, Melbourne's Tall Ship

A tall ship and a star to sail her by…

Hills resident Ian Watkins is a proud deckhand, committee member and sometime pirate on the square-rigged two-masted schooner Enterprize, a newly-built replica of the ship that brought the first settlers to Melbourne in 1835.

The Enterprize can often be seen plying the waters of Port Phillip Bay and the south-east coast of Australia.

From keel laying to launch took six years of dedication by craftsmen assisted by teams of volunteers.

Ian will share his love affair with the Enterprize: its important heritage and  meticulous construction in an evening of tall stories and stunning photography.

Get Reading: Dual Walkley Award winning journalist Caroline Overington discusses the move to fiction

In her career as a journalist Caroline Overington won two Walkley Awards for Investigative Journalism and the Keith Murdoch Award for Journalistic Excellence.

She is the author two nonfiction books Only in New York and Kickback which won the Blake Dawson Prize for Business Literature.

In 2009 Caroline wrote her first work of fiction Ghost Child and followed it in 2010 with I Came to Say Goodbye. Both books were critically acclaimed. Matilda is Missing, Caroline’s third novel, will be published in October 2011.

Caroline comes to us today as part of Get Reading, a federal government sponsored initiative. Please join us for a most interesting lunch.

On Wednesday's show
This week, Jessica brought a steampunk theme to Eastern FM. We discussed what the steampunk genre was about and where it's title came from (steampunk being french for "futur a vapeur", meaning future with steam).

Steampunk is a sub-genre of the fantasy and science-fiction branches that centres on work in an era or world where steampower is the main source of energy. Typically set in a 19th century Victorian England style, steampunk features futuristic technologies within an antique setting (for example; think of H.G. Wells Time Machine).

Write a story, save wildlife - Young wildlife writers competition

Wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering and partners have announced a fantastic opportunity for young writers.

All budding young writers are invited to submit a story inspired by any of the animals or subjects helped by Wildlife Warrior’s conservation partners – Snow Leopards, Cheetahs or any other wild cat – or North American wildlife or wilderness areas.

Enter your story

• Who can enter? Children from anywhere in the world in the following age groups - 8 years and under, 9 – 13 years and 14 – 18  years
• How many words does the story have to be? Entries should be up to 1,000 words
• What are the prizes? Winners in each age group will receive award certificates, and a book and limited edition print signed by Pollyanna. An over all winner will then be chosen, and Pollyanna will create a painting of the animal subject of their story inspired by their writing. This painting will be published as a limited edition, and the winner will receive the number one print, signed by Pollyanna, in addition to their other prizes. The print will then be sold to raise funds for the winner’s chosen conservation partner.  
• Can I submit stories I have published? The stories must be the entrants own work, previously unpublished and submitted in English. 
• How much is the entry fee? Entry is free. 
• Can I write a true story? Work can be either fiction or factual
• When is the closing date? Closing date for entries is 31st December 2011. Winners will be announced on the 30th January 2012.

Down South - Australian Tradies in Antarctica

The great explorer, Sir Douglas Mawson, led the first Australian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) 100 years ago this year. One of the activities celebrating a centenary of Australia's involvement and Mawson's historic achievements is a photographic exhibition Down South, which tells the stories of the fabulous men and women who have ventured to the Antarctic from 1947 to the 1980’s.

Susan Gordon-Brown, the photographer, has spoken to 25 tradespeople and photographed them as they are now, aged between 50 and 90 years old. You are invited to learn more about this successful touring exhibition which is a combination of these portraits and their stories, as written by Gayl O’Connor.

Her photographs have been used for various print publications, including our local Ferntree Gully News, websites,and in electronic format for educational purposes. Footprints - the journey of Lucy and Pepper in early 20th century Victoria

This exhibition from Public Record Office Victoria draws on original public and family records to tell the story of an Aboriginal family's struggle for survival in early twentieth century Victoria.

The Eastern Regional Library Show 31st August 2011

Library staff members Lyn Baines, Jessica Bonner and Pia Butcher run a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in next week for a great show.

On Wednesday's show

Yesterday on the Library Show Lorraine and Janet chose Homes of Donegal from the CD Take Me Home by Celtic Thunder.

The DVDs we spoke about were Mountain with Griff Rhys Jones, Another Year starring Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen, Babette’s Feast and An Audience with Kenneth Williams. This last title has yet to be added to our catalogue but will be available shortly.

The books were A Family in Paris by Jane Paech and From Splendor to Revolution: the Romanov Women 1847 – 1928 by Julia P Gelardi. Both books can be requested from Eastern Regional Library branches.
