Mainly for Men - BYO timepieces for a talk on rare and antique clocks

Phillip Gore, Ferntree Gully's own horologist, will share his passion in his collection of rare and antique clocks, pocket watches and wrist watches.

Included in his display will be an 18th century chronometer, which revolutionised maritime navigation by enabling ships to accurately determine longitude.

Feel free to bring your own curious timepiece.

This session marks the start of Ferntree Gully Library's 2012 Mainly for Men program.

Mainly for Men - Before the iPod, a history of mechanical music

Retired engineer John Wolff has long been fascinated by technical antiques, especially mechanical calculating machines and self-playing musical instruments. He has amassed a significant collection of both calculating and musical machines during his travels around Australia. John has restored many of these machines to working order, and has documented their history and mechanisms in a popular website.

In this session he will talk about some of the mechanical instruments that provided folk with recorded music in the days before iPods, LPs, or wind-up gramophones. The focus will be on the technical and social history of "mechanical music", with plenty of hands-on examples. There will be opportunities to examine and play some of the typical domestic instruments of the time.

Mainly for men - Learn about Enterprize, Melbourne's Tall Ship

A tall ship and a star to sail her by…

Hills resident Ian Watkins is a proud deckhand, committee member and sometime pirate on the square-rigged two-masted schooner Enterprize, a newly-built replica of the ship that brought the first settlers to Melbourne in 1835.

The Enterprize can often be seen plying the waters of Port Phillip Bay and the south-east coast of Australia.

From keel laying to launch took six years of dedication by craftsmen assisted by teams of volunteers.

Ian will share his love affair with the Enterprize: its important heritage and  meticulous construction in an evening of tall stories and stunning photography.
