The Eastern Regional Library Show

Library staff member Lesley Conway runs a radio show each Wednesday 12:05pm-12:45pm on Eastern FM 98.1 called The Eastern Regional Library Show. Tune in next Wednesday for a great show.

On this week's show

Sometimes a favourite author runs out of puff, or just stretches out their characters for too long. Lyn Baines and I had a bit of a chat about the detective novels of Martha Grimes featuring Detective Inspector Richard Jury. Martha Grimes is an entertaining writer with a great eye for the quirky and offbeat. However, her hero has been in something of a personal limbo for over 30 years now, and the setbacks in his private life have become irritating rather than arousing sympathy. There is still some entertainment value in her latest Dust, but it might not leave you panting for the next in the series. The same cannot be said for Marcia Muller and her PI Sharon McCone, who has grown older and wiser with the years. The latest title featuring this detective is The ever-running man, mixing murder and industrial espionage.

Another author whose invention is as fresh as ever is Alexander McCall Smith, with a new title in his Scotland Street series, featuring a very precocious six year old called Bertie. The world according to Bertie is the latest of the collated serialised stories which McCall Smith writes every week for The Scotsman newspaper. The chapters are short, ideal to read while consuming tea, toast and marmalade for breakfast and guaranteed to set you up cheerfully for the day ahead.
