Book Reservation Limit introduced as of Monday 3rd Feb

From Monday 3 February 2014, patrons will be limited to 20 holds on their library record at any one time.

The reason for limiting holds is to allow fair and equitable access to the entire collection for all library patrons.

The limit will be an overall limit regardless of the type of item on hold.  Once the limit is reached patrons will not be able to place holds via the web catalogue.  They will only be able to place another hold once their total number of holds is reduced to below the 20 limit.  This may be done by either collecting a hold awaiting pick up, or cancelling one or more holds.

For more information, don't hesitate to call us on 1300 737 277 or post on our Facebook Page.

What happens when you have items on reserve in which you are on a long waiting list for? Like new releases in which you rank 20+ which can take weeks for its availability. Could those be exempt of the 20?

Thanks for your question. There is no way to make popular titles with long waiting lists exempt from the 20 hold limit.

Suspended holds also count towards the 20 holds.

I would suggest allocating a certain number of holds for popular titles that you might be on a long waiting list for and then using the rest for regular holds that come in quickly.

Once you borrow holds awaiting pickup you may then place more holds.

Hi, what happens if you have currently more than 20 holds in the system after Feb 3 in which they are still unavailable for pick up?

If you currently have more than 20 holds on your card you will gradually have your holds fulfilled as the items come in. However, you will not be able to place any more holds on until the total number of holds is reduced to under 20.

I hope this clarifies things. Thanks for your questions.

Hi, I just tried to place a hold on a book from a (non-ERL) library, and it's telling me that the "hold [is] not allowed". I've never had a problem with this before, and I only have 18 items on hold. Did something glitch out, or did inter-library loans get cancelled?

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for contacting us via the blog. Loans and holds from our consortium partners or other libraries haven't been cancelled. We would need some more details to look at the item and your membership record. Please contact us via the website contact form and we'll look into it - http://www.erl.vic.gov.au/main/emailform.php?m=142.
